In celebration of the Vittore Carpaccio exhibition hosted at the Palazzo Ducale, Ca’ Pesaro presents the last cycle of works by the painter Marco Petrus. The Capricci series were inspired by the rigorous, measured lines of the typical Venetian breeches worn by characters depicted in scenes in a number of canvases by Vittore Carpaccio and Giovanni Mansueti, on display in Venice’s Gallerie dell’Accademia.
The Capricci are therefore to be seen as a sort of mental game and pictorial exercise. But also as an expression of love for painting and its multiple forms and possibilities: the cycle on show is made of 28 medium and large format canvases, placed side by side or one on top of the other, in a dynamic succession of cross-references, exchanges, allusions and quotes that the viewer, as for a complicated rebus, is invited to observe and solve with the mind even before the eyes.
